Kawasaki H2R The Monster of SuperBike

Kawasaki H2R The Monster of SuperBike

The numbers only tell half the story. Driving a monstrous and supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 or H2R is something we can hardly define in words.

While Kawasaki's mechanics remove the heating blankets, two brand new Bridgestone V01 Slicks appear. But they will not last long. Is that on top of them is the new Kawasaki H2, the first series production bike that uses a compressor. With the H2, Kawasaki combined the wisdom of the various divisions of the Akashi group, whether at the level of aeronautics, as well as at the level of compressors, materials, and technologies.

The result of this ambitious project is the H2R track only with its 310 hp, from which the H2 road version with 200 hp is derived. It is true that other manufacturers have already used turbos instead of compressors on production bikes. And the current "thousand" easily reach 200 hp. But a compressor had never been used in this way, especially when it offers a torque curve that is so linear that it reaches 133 Nm. This is why the compressor has been incorporated in the construction of this engine since its inception. Thus, the cooling and lubrication systems are integrated into the engine. Cold air is sucked through a channel on the left side of the engine, so an intercooler is not required.

"The turn of your life," was how Martin Lambert, communications director for Kawasaki, referred to H2 the night before the test in Losail. Perfect! But first, I discovered that H2 even offers a nice "work environment." The handles are 10 mm higher and fixed 10 mm further forward than the ZX-10R. The seat allows good range of movements and the rear section of this adjusts to 15 mm to better fix us in acceleration. The clutch is so light that we hardly realize that we are in command of a monstrous motorcycle. In the first few curves, caution still prevailed. With the transmission passing all the power to the rear wheel, between 6,000 and 8,000 rpm these Ninjas seem to be all the same as a "normal" sporty 1000cc. But then the fun starts! The "Kawa" begins to inhale and breathe out deeply. The acceleration is enormous, inexhaustible, regardless of the speed at which we are going. We are accompanied by a whistling of the compressor and the sound of the discharge valve when we reduce the accelerator.

KTM 690 Duke 2016: Metzeler M7 RR original equipment

The violence of the engine pulls the tire and the rear bumper to the maximum, and we feel the rear give way to the unbelievable pressure exerted on it. The way this engine reaches its peak performance is amazing, as it has a massive force but at the same time is extremely smooth. In such a gentle way that we often reach the limit of 14,000 rpm without realizing it and then, in a hurry, we try to change the box to the next ratio using the "quick shift" to continue our way in Losail. After a few laps, I started to see 299 km / h at the end of the finish line.

The brake "cocktail" consists of discs 330 mm in diameter, four-piston Brembo calipers and radial pumps that can withstand the strength of the H2, back to back, without denoting fatigue. The braking power means that we do not have a "bite" too fierce, because the touch is doable and progressive, without losing effectiveness. Despite its 238 kg full, the Ninja H2 likes to attack aggressive trajectories. It may not be as refined as a ZX-10R, but in the case of the H2, what is sought is pure, hard brutality. So we have amazing speed, stability, agility enough for aggressive trajectories, but also, and maybe it's one of the characteristics that makes H2 "around your life," an aggressive accelerator. If we are too bold, the bike jumps forward too fast, and the front rises toward the sky.

The H2R arrives: Before the technicians put the machines to work, earplugs are distributed. So ... an infernal symphony begins. With a barbaric sound emanating from the full titanium exhaust system, the H2R wakes up for life. My guts shake with every spin up and compared to that, even a MotoGP box is quiet. To the palms of the perspiration, I feel a lump in my throat. The first lap on the track is done with more caution than usual. But even slowly, I quickly realized that the H2R has a much more powerful "hammer" than its sister. In H2 the air inlet is only made by a channel, while in the H2R both "nostrils" inserted in the front are wide open to let in fresh air. The camshafts are different, different head gaskets, the aforementioned racing exhaust system, and an ECU with injection maps release the full potential of the four-cylinder engine.

Then I reach the goal line for the first time, and then the "hammer" decides to fall with all its force! The compressor starts rotating at 9.2 times the crankshaft speed and operates at a maximum pressure of 2.4 bar. The compressor sucks 100 liters of air at a speed of 100 m / s. That is five to ten times more air than what goes into a natural aspiration engine. I am catapulted to the front in an impressive way, and even a MotoGP will find it difficult to accompany this Kawasaki in a sprint duel. At its maximum speed, the CNC machined compressor runs at 130,000 rpm, far more than the speed of sound. And it is at the speed of sound that we feel at the controls. With the heart beating hard, we do not have time to look at the pit wall, nor look away to the left or right. The gaze is fixed on the braking point. Of course, I get the brakes too soon. But even so they are already marked 320 km / h on the speedometer! The H2R remains stable in the brakes, with the rear wanting to "dance" a little.

KTM Duke 790 arrives in concessions 2018

But fortunately the sliding clutch, together with the adjustable engine brake, can digest all this. The constant murmur and whistling of the compressor are the perfect soundtrack to the madness that happens in the straight lines. H2R is notoriously more accurate, more stable and more direct than H2. Suspension adjustments are slightly tougher, which, together with the less than 22 pounds, greatly improve handling, accuracy, and feedback. The throttle response is a bit softer, but the traction control is always doing "overtime" at each corner exit. It took me two or three laps until I hit the braking points and calm my nerves along the goal line, and then I could see on the dashboard 332 km / h! From here I was pulling on the H2R and felt the ABS disconnectable (not disconnectable on the H2) to tighten the brake lever once or twice. In the "closed door", I discovered that the H2R has already been measured at more than 370 km / h.

This engine is a "beast" that wants to roar out loud at every opportunity. All normal braking points stop working on this bike, and it was impossible to make a full turn without getting your heart to beat harder. The tubular frame in steel holds up with the greatest efforts. It is elegant and has a slender silhouette. In functional terms it allows better heat dissipation of the engine when compared to a double aluminum frame, whose beams contain the heat inside, and therefore the radiator can be relatively small. In addition, this painting reveals welds, partially made by hand, which are a feast for the eyes. The H2 and H2R are the embodiment of the purest construction art. In fact, the process of building these bikes is wonderful. This engine integrates Kawasaki's first detonation sensor, and the cylinders are designed to withstand twice the explosive load of a naturally aspirated engine.

KTM 690 Duke New 2018

The exhaust valves are composed of a steel shaft to which a valve has been added in Inconel, a nickel and chromium metal alloy. This is the only way the engine can withstand the stress of the electronic-controlled start-up control system or the adjustable engine brake or the Öhlins electronic steering damper or the traction control using a variety of sensors to limit slippage about. The traction control can withstand most of the time the sliding of the rear, but it is inevitable that, at the exit of the turns, we are offered with one or another "slide". Therefore, the pilot should always keep an eye out. And you should also be aware of the "horsepower", because the engine rises very fast, too fast for the traction control system to intervene before the front wheel rises to the sky, and therefore H2R requires greater sensitivity the throttle. The H2R is pure madness. Martin Lambert was right: it's the turn of our life ... and there's nothing like it!

BMW S1000RR HP4 RACE 2018 : The ultimate German Superbike

BMW S1000RR HP4 RACE 2018 : The ultimate German Superbike

BMW HP4 RACE 2018 - The ultimate German Superbike

Since the release of the S1000RR in 2009, BMW has introduced several high-performance versions (HP4) of its supersport. Super-equipped machines with exotic pieces. With the HP4 Race, the Bavarian firm takes another step and offers us - way to speak - an exclusive bike ready for the track. A concentrate of know-how, technology, sportsmanship, exoticism, and passion.

Before going further in my presentation, let's start with what annoys: the price. Indeed, the HP4 Race is an exceptional bike and, as such, it is proposed at the exorbitant price of $ 95,000. And, because of this, it is not addressed to the mass of motorcyclists, but to a wealthy elite who can afford a sport with technical characteristics worthy of a motorcycle World Superbike Championship (WSBK).

The irony is that this bike built in the workshops of the BMW racing team in Berlin, which has the same parts as the BMW S1000RR of the official BMW Althea team, is not homologated to compete in the FIM (International Motorcycling Federation) championship whose rules stipulate that the motorcycles selected must be based on a road bike, which the HP4 Race is not. It can only be used on the track, for exclusive driving days, excluding the championship.

BMW presented this exceptional bike at the Estoril circuit in Portugal, where our colleague Costa Mouzouris had ample time to discover and appreciate it.

Although it looks like the S1000RR, the HP4 Race - a limited edition produced at only 750 copies - shares nothing with the production machine, except for the crankcases. So it's not a motorcycle modified for the World Superbike Championship, but a new machine whose centerpiece is a sublime carbon fiber frame that weighs only 7.8 kg, or 4 kg less than the aluminum version of the road version. When you weigh this frame, it feels like a toy in the hands, not the spine of a Superbike of more than 200 horses. And the engineers could have made it even lighter if they wanted to. At least that's what designer Elmar Jaeger claims: "BMW had to take into account the longevity of the machine, its crimping and its resistance to corrosion, all of which are not crucial on a motorcycle intended for competition on the market. which life of parts rarely exceeds a few races. "

To address the problem of crimping - the material compresses over time due to the assembly at the mounting points - aluminum inserts are used on all frame attachment points. Since carbon fiber contains carbon (a Lapalisse truth), it reacts with aluminum to cause corrosion, such as when aluminum is in direct contact with steel. These inserts are molded into the frame instead of being pressed, so that oxygen does not seep between the two materials, thus limiting corrosion. The thickness of the frame wall is also optimized for better longevity. The wheels, the rear loop of the frame and the body are also made of carbon fiber.
All these technical tips help to reduce the weight of the HP4 Race to 171 kg fully loaded, 37 kg less than the production bike and 8 kg less than the race.

The comparison of the chassis geometry with that of the S1000RR is irrelevant since the hunting angle (23.5 / 25.5 degrees), the offset (95/112 mm), the offset of the fork crown (26 / 32 mm) and swivel arm pivot height (+/- 4 mm) are all adjustable, and all necessary inserts are included on the motorcycle. The height of the bike, the seat and the height of the footrests are also adjustable. The HP4 Race comes with three different box-outlet sprockets and five rear crowns.

Öhlins supplies the suspension components - real units used in WSBK -, including a fork FGR300, which is designed so that it is not necessary to remove the brake calipers to remove the wheel. The single shock is a TTX36 GP. Both elements are fully adjustable and identical to the parts found on the Superbike racing team, Althea.

The brakes are Brembo GP4-PR racing at the front, with a nice little four-piston caliper at the rear (a single piston on the production bike).

But these are not the only race pieces on the HP4 Race. If you've read my exclusive test of BMW racing motorcycles, published last year on motoplus.ca, you'll remember the content of BMW's runner-up program and the three different types of engines that the German firm offers them... The HP4 Race uses a combination of the 6.2 and 7.2 engines (modified cylinder head, race camshafts, and 6.2 engine valves combined with the lighter crankshaft and 7.2 forged connecting rods).

It also uses a close-ratio gearbox, the third gear being identical to that of the production bike. Each HP4 Race engine is checked on a chassis dynamometer to ensure that it produces at least 215 horsepower (only 5 hp less than the WSBK engine, but 16 hp more than the production one). If the numbers are not satisfactory, then the engine is destroyed.

You now understand that the HP4 is not a variant of the S1000RR. However, what differentiates the two machines the most is the electronic arsenal which is much more elaborate on the HP4 Race. It has four modes of driving (Rain, Intermediate, Sec 1, Sec 2), a dynamic traction control with 15 levels of intervention, an adjustable anticorrosion which intervenes only in the three inferior ratios, an adjustable engine brake on 15 levels, a starting mode that works on the first and second gear and a speed limiter in the pit lane.

The HP4 Race also includes a bi-directional electronic gear selector and a 2D data logger. The dashboard can be configured to display a multitude of information, including traction control, engine braking, driving modes, lap times (validated by the onboard GPS), as well as more elaborate data such as accelerator opening, front and rear wheel rotation speed, tilt angle, and if optional sensors are installed, brake pressure and travel of the suspension.

The settings of the electronics can be made on the fly thanks to the equipment reserved for the race which is simplified compared to that used on the production bike (only three big buttons on each side) and very easy to use.

RUN A MOTO OF $ 100,000
Before you even sit on the HP4 Race, you know you're about to have an amazing experience and drive an exclusive bike that you will not be able to afford. The fine tuning and finishing of the carbon parts, the precision-engineered crankcases, and levers, the truncated rear section all speak to the performance. Efficiency. The exhaust is not exceptionally noisy. He is even quieter than most of the Superbikes at the CSBK Canadian Championship.

To allow us to make a comparison and measure the progress made on the HP4 Race, a fleet of S1000RR 2017 series is available to recognize the circuit that is unknown to the majority of journalists invited.

The only changes made to these machines are the configuration of the gearbox (inverted box, as in competition and on the HP4 Race) and the Pirelli Diablo Superbike SC2 slicks tires, the same ones that equip the HP4 Race.

Each of us is entitled to four 20-minute sessions on the HP4 Race in addition to being able to drive an S1000RR every time we are not on the test bike. After two sessions at the controls of the production bike, I jumped on the HP4. Immediately, I found the driving position much more radical. The saddle is higher and the feet are abnormally raised, even if both are adjusted to their intermediate positions.

The other surprise is the lightness of the machine. Its superior rigidity and extreme precision. It took me less than a ride to feel completely at ease on his handlebars. The HP4 Race is much more precise than the S1000RR, which is a motorcycle with exceptional handling. I had to put in less physical effort to push the HP4 Race to the limit, especially in the pins and pifs pafs and achieve faster lap times.

The electronics of this exceptional machine are incomparable to the one currently found on the market. She is much more evolved. The anti-wheelie is virtually invisible, allowing the bike to propel itself forward at unimaginable speed, without lifting the front wheel into the air, at least until you reach the fourth gear, where it will end by getting up at very high speed if you are not careful. On the production bike, the wheelies are more frequent, especially at the exit of slower turns, which makes it more demanding to drive (and marginally faster in these sections).

For the first ride on the HP4 Race, the engineers selected the "Intermediate" mode, until we got used to the bike. So set, the bike is very fast. Only when I returned to the wells did I realize that it was actually set to "Sec 1" mode ... I wonder how it is possible? Our hosts have specifically asked us not to try the "Sec 2" mode because the anti-wheelie is disabled in this mode, which could have unfortunate consequences. Still, the HP4 Race is easy to master for such a powerful bike.

At the end of the curve, the control of the accelerator borders on perfection. Despite the phenomenal power of the bike, you can exit turns on the three lower gears with the throttle open wide, without the risk of being ejected. The control modes offer different power curves in the first, second and third gear. This makes the throttle remarkably easy to manage, especially coming out of the chicane that was negotiated first and at the exit of which we accelerate thoroughly while we are still learning. Once in the straight line, in fourth gear, the acceleration is brutal. In comparison, the standard S1000RR looks almost like a small engine.

Traction control also works smoothly, producing only a slight detonation, indicating that it handles grip effectively. I started at level +6 (the available settings range from -7 to +7, that is to say, at least to the most interventionist). At the end of the day, I opted for level +3, without any problem. Having had more time, I would have reduced traction control, even more, to see when it became inoperative.

At the end of the straight line that we negotiate at nearly 300 km / h, you have to brake very hard to jump into a right to 90 ° which makes you raise blood in the face. In these extreme conditions, Brembo brakes do a remarkable job. On rare occasions, I noticed a slight loss of efficiency at the end of the session. Unlike the front brake of the S1000RR which had to readjust the lever in the same circumstances.

The only problem I have experienced with the HP4 Race comes from the saddle lining. It offers too much grip and I can not slide easily on the saddle during swaying, which forces me to lift my rear to go from one angle to another.

A TRUE MOTORCYCLE
The BMW HP4 Race is not a replica Superbike. It is a real race bike, although it is not legal in any type of competition at the moment. Of course, the HP4 race is expensive to buy and use. The maintenance intervals are set at 5,000 km. BMW then recommends replacing the engine - an investment of about 15,000 euros - which is more economical than rebuilding the existing engine according to the manufacturer.

Unfortunately, this is the price to pay for the exclusivity and performance of a bike worthy of the WSBK. That BMW has decided to produce this exclusive bike is remarkable. Even daring! Especially since the S1000RR has been at the top of the open class class since its release in 2009 and has consistently put the bar of performance at a very high level. If you can afford to add an HP4 Race to your collection, you will not regret your investment. But to realize the extraordinary potential of this bike, you will have to drive it ...

KTM X-BOW REVIEWS, SPECS, PRICE

The KTM X-Bow is the first car model created by the Austrian manufacturer of KTM motorcycles. Meaning "crossbow" in French1, the name of the model is pronounced Cross-Bow2. Designed in collaboration with Dallara, the X-Bow is equipped with a four-cylinder engine of Volkswagen origin, in this case, that equipping the compact sports GTI Golf.

Homologated for a road use, the X-Bow is nevertheless a tray intended essentially for a use on the circuit; it is thus devoid of doors, roof, and windshield. Its chassis is also entirely made of carbon fiber, which allows it to maintain its weight around 790 kg according to the manufacturer. An uncompromising machine, the X-Bow is the heiress of the little English roadsters such as the Lotus Seven.

Despite a favorable reception by the specialized press after its presentation in 2007, the commercial career of the X-Bow is at the same time penalized by its radical conception and by the effects of the economic crisis. Sales not taking off despite the efforts of KTM, its production is finally interrupted at the end of 2009.

At the origins of the design of the X-Bow is the desire of the firm KTM to diversify its offer. The Austrian brand is then the number two European motorcycle construction behind the German BMW, with nearly 100,000 units produced per year, and is characterized by its productions rather "tempered" character. To compensate for the erosion of its biker customers, KTM decided to offer an offer for motorists3.

The brand does not want to enter the extremely competitive general automotive sector and opts for the production of a radical model, with a purely and explicitly sporting vocation3. The specifications define the specifications of a container without any modern comfort, without doors, without roof or windshield. The X-Bow, at the end of its concept, offers neither air conditioning, electronic assistance, airbag, nor comfortable upholstery4.

The first version of the model is presented in an orange livery at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007. In September, KTM communicates the prices of the X-Bow, which will be available for sale in spring 2008 from € 45,850 excluding taxes, price comparable to that of its most direct competitors such as Ariel Atom and Caterham CSR 200. Although a doubt still remains about a possible homologation for use on open road5, the production starts in June 2008 and the first models are delivered in August. The European homologation is finally obtained during the year 2009.

In order to meet its goal of producing a model that is as light as it is efficient on a circuit, KTM opts for the use of carbon fiber, which involves using the services of a partner who has the necessary experience to work with this material. The Austrian brand uses Dallara Automobili, a specialist in chassis construction for motor racing7. The meeting between the motorcycle manufacturer and chassis manufacturer is also an opportunity for Giampaolo Dallara to realize an old dream: pay tribute to Colin Chapman by creating an heiress worthy of the Lotus Seven3.

Dallara's know-how is paramount in the design of the chassis. It is even expected that the assembly of the trays would also be entrusted to the Italian specialist, but the success with the public and the many pre-orders recorded from the presentation of the X-Bow prompt the CEO of the brand, Stefan Pierer, to edit its strategy7. Indeed, it is now a question of producing hundreds of frames - a volume much higher than the possibilities of the artisan Dallara. KTM bought the German company Wethje, a specialist in composite materials8, and began construction of a new plant in Graz, Austria7.

Dictated by the requirements of performance, the proportions of this chassis - and therefore, by extension, those of the X-Bow - are uncommon: with 3.74 m long and 1.92 m wide, the KTM is at the times much shorter than a Renault Clio and as wide as a Ferrari F430. Its wheelbase of more than 2,40 m, an important value for a vehicle of this length, rejects the wheels at the four corners and reinforces the atypical pace of the X-Bow7.

Proven mechanics

The Audi S3 lends its mechanical base to the KTM X-Bow.
MENU0: 00
The engine noise of the X-Bow.
Just like the chassis design, KTM does not have the experience or the know-how to make a car mechanic. The development of a specific engine block is too expensive for such a project, the X-Bow must borrow a mechanical base from another model. KTM will thus seek within the VAG group the engine of its roadster and stops its choice on the 2.0-liter TFSI block that equips the Volkswagen Golf IV, León Cupra and Cupra R, Audi TTS and Audi S37.

With an engine capacity of 1,984 cm3, this supercharged four-cylinder in-line unit develops, in the version selected for the X-Bow, a power of 240 horsepower - 25 less than the version mounted in the S3, but 20 of more than that used in the presentation of the X-Bow in March 20075 - and 310 Newton-meters of torque, available from the lowest speeds. Given the limited weight of the vehicle, this engine allows the KTM to display a weight/power ratio of 3.3 kg/hp, more favorable than that of a Porsche 911 GT38. In addition, this block also holds the attention of KTM engineers because of its reliability, proven after two seasons of use in automobile competition9. On the other hand, its sound, already particularly discreet even banal at the stop, is quickly entirely covered by the aerodynamic noises due to the absence of roof and windshield10,11.

This engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and also Audi9's original manual control. The use of a double-clutch robotic gearbox type DSG has been considered before being discarded for reasons of weight7. The clutch is also coming directly from the Audi body bank, which gives it an unusual smoothness and ease of use in this automotive segment8.

Like a competition model, the X-Bow is built on the basis of a monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber "tub" type on which are grafted a few body parts, powertrain, and suspensions10 - an architecture based on the intensive use of composite materials and thus guaranteeing lightness and rigidity12.

Developed by Loris Bicocchi, a tester and stage the experienced point that has already worked for prestigious brands such as Bugatti or Pagani3, the X-Bow is shown both handy and efficient thanks to its sophisticated suspension system. Equipped with fully adjustable shock absorbers in compression and relaxation, it is very progressive when pushed to its limits13. Its weight and aerodynamics designed to generate as much support as possible also allow it to run at high curves - KTM also announces a potential of 1.5 G in bend8.

Designed by Gerald Kiska, the brand's "home" designer7, the X-Bow has been studied to provide, thanks to its various body elements and its flat bottom, an aerodynamic support of 48 kg at 100 km / h and of 193 kg at 200 km / h14, which gives it a very high level of adhesion11. In addition, its very heavy weight distribution on the rear axle - the front / rear ratio is 37/63% static and 35/65% dynamic - and its rear axle with self-locking differential allow the X-Bow d 'offer excellent motor skills8

KTM also announces a potential of 1.5 G in turn8.

Behavior and performance

The driving position, with the removable steering wheel, removed ...

... then flying in place.
Although its mechanical base is directly from mass production vehicles, the X-Bow has been designed as pure sports. Thus, its very bare structure and devoid of any element of comfort allows him to display a relatively contained mass since announced by the manufacturer to 790 kg dry10. This radicality is reflected in the cockpit and the cockpit, which stand out in particular by bucket seats attached directly to the hull, "Schroth" four-point harnesses, an adjustable pedal, and an extractable steering wheel2.

This very sport-oriented design is translated on the road by "raw" behavior, without any filter or compromise13. Without any assistance in driving - power steering, ABS, traction control, etc. -, the X-Bow is extremely precise and lively in terms of road behavior while being, thanks to its mechanics large series, much more docile than a real racing car2. For some journalists, the KTM shows a "bewildering road holding" coupled with a "breathtaking agility" 11, recalling the behavior of a single-seater13. However, the X-Bow remains relatively easy to use and healthy in its reactions when conducted at the limit10, which makes it much less demanding to drive - but also less "thin" and effective - than Ariel Atom15.

In addition, thanks to its weight content, the X-Bow reaches a very high level of performance given its power level. The 0 to 100 km / h is thus announced by the manufacturer in 3s 94, while the 160 km / h are reached in 11 seconds16. On the other hand, it reaches a maximum speed of only 217 km / h - a relatively modest value for a vehicle with 240 horsepower17. Its aerodynamic profile, designed to provide support primarily in the context of use on the racing circuit, represents a handicap in pure speed because it generates a significant drag.

This generally positive balance sheet is however tarnished by the only real complaint made to the X-Bow: its weight. Weighing less than 800 kg, it remains significantly lighter than a "standard" car, but is nevertheless much heavier than its direct competitors such as the Ariel Atom (530 kg) or the Caterham CSR 200 (630 kg) 7. It is also heavier than the first versions of the Lotus Elise, which stood at 720 kg18 and yet were equipped - unlike the KTM - doors, side windows, a windshield, a system heating or a removable roof.

New in 2018: the KTM 790 Duke arrives in concessions

That's it she is available. The new KTM 790 Duke arrives in dealerships and with it its full range of accessories and equipment.

At a time when the future 1290 Super Duke makes its test gallops during various road tests (find here her stolen photos), the little sister arrives at Austrian dealers. KTM announces the immediate availability of its 790 Duke.

The one that the Austrian simply calls "the scalpel" arrives and with it its line of specific accessories from the PowerParts range (30 accessories were developed specifically for the new duchess). In parallel, clothes and other equipment are also available in the PowerWear catalog.

For the record, this new Duke 790 is powered by a motor promising 105 horsepower and 87 Nm (this is the latest LC8c engine, an ultra-compact parallel twin). On the side of the audience we find the following elements:

  • an effective ABS curve,
  • a motorcycle traction control (MTC) sensitive to the angle of inclination,
  • four different driving modes,
  • a Quickshifter up and down,
  • a start-up control,
  • optional KTM My Ride smartphone connectivity (receiving calls and listening to music with Bluetooth technology)

KTM 390 Duke 2017 Colours, Price, Mileage, And Reviews

It is a tire presented as able to rise quickly in order to be able to offer all its dynamic qualities that we are also checking with a long test that will arrive soon in our columns

In short, monogrammed 100% silica for the front, a bigomme compound for the back element.

"The 100% Silica Shoulder Compound provides a chemical grip on dry and wet surfaces. It is supported by a harder compound in the substrate for exceptional stability and steering precision when cornering. This same "basic" compound emerges in the central part of the tread and guarantees a high longevity, "concludes the Germanic ...

KTM 390 Duke 2017 Colours, Price, Mileage, And Reviews

In terms of roadster fun, the Duke 390 is a bit like the 357 Magnum category: a "ball" would say the "djeuns", whose weight/power ratio is most advantageous. A bike with the plastic dream, reviewed this year and become directly accessible to holders of the A2 license, without losing its pure juice. Need a vitamin C cure? Read this essay quickly!

In 2017, the KTM Duke 390 adopts the euro4 standard and evolves intelligently without cutting corners: a very efficient mono in a featherweight chassis. All just remembered our excellent memories in test ...

Life often teaches us that we must not trust appearances. The bike too. We already know that small cylinders are regularly able to put a pill too big ones. And would the Duke 390 be able to do the same? On the roof of the old Fiat factory in Turin, we are jumping from the saddle of the Duke 125 to that of the 390. It is pouring rain, and we turn the throttle to throw ourselves on the oval of the circuit offered to us. Curious? Not as much as the reaction that follows ...

The Duke 390 leaped in a hoarse roar. The thunder that resonates? No, the engine! Through an exhaust, however, similar to that of the 125, it gives the voice, a sign of a higher engine capacity. While 48 km / h is displayed on the meter, the shift light has been flashing for a while. The engine ruptures to the bottom of 1st. Clack. The second pass easily, while we attack the banking, this famous type of turned bend. The sky is illuminating. Flash. A lightning? No, a photographer ... Some suspension bounces later - the bend in question is paved and smashed - the movement is well cashed. Nearly 80 km / h are displayed at a depth of 2. It is now necessary to take the brakes on the wet track. Quick. The bike stays online. Stronger. The ABS still does not trip. A few meters from the turning point, the lever comes almost to a stop. The Metzeler Sportec M5 does not pick up, while the anti-lock is barely felt and continues to optimize the stopping distance. The radial caliper does not let go of the case and masters its subject. Sporty, perfectly calibrated, the ABS officiates brilliantly on the wet ground. Releasing the brakes, the bike turns naturally, all its lightness and ease.

Orange alert!
After a few laps, we take shelter in the ramp to the roof. Spiraling, it offers tight turns and dry. We take part of the shots. The balance of the Duke 390 is even better when you play with the weight of your body. It is placed to the nearest centimeter. The knee comes out quickly inside the bend. The 149 kilos dry settle without effort. They are obvious, just placed on the ground on gums behavior once again impeccable. The 150/60 rear tire offers ease of cornering, control, and comfort, as well as stability. The 110/70 front offers precision, progressive commitment, and serene guidance. We control perfectly.

A euro4 engine in shape
Once again, the motor health surprises. While the sound of the most sporty and powerful resonates in the building, we take advantage of the moment. Departures are lively, immediate reminders. At least when the report is well chosen. The injection makes it easy to maintain a steady state and does not pose any problem once the "nerve range" (2,500 / 4,000 rpm) is exceeded. The comfort zone then starts. At least on the first three reports. We only use two here. The accelerator type Ride By Wire (electronic, without cable, so), novelty 2017 on the Duke 390, offers on its side a precise gas management. Just notice the engine stay a few moments in the towers after cutting. What makes the change of gear more pleasant, a bit like an RPM Assist Suzuki.

All in muscles
The rain has gone! By taking the route leading into the surrounding mountains, we take full advantage of the qualities of the cycling part of the Duke 390 2017. Its sports tires are going to delight. On the attack on dry and dry roads, the socks of the archduchess rally to the snow-capped summits with haste. The bitumen rippling under the Metzeler Sportec M5 would be a nightmare on most current roadsters. Not with the Duke 390! If the rigor of winter is no doubt, that suspensions of the KTM either! Particularly criticized in our Maxitest (read reviews on the 390 Duke here), depreciation has progressed well. The new elements officiate brilliantly to erase potholes, various holes, and reliefs of all kinds. Just manage to make the rear of the motorcycle do deliver. Conditions? Downhill, in a sharp bend, at full load, and on the corner ... all in a succession of vacant bumps. The Duke 390, however, has lost nothing in guiding precision and has self-stabilized. A treat that keeps even beginners safe from inappropriate reactions.

Sport at the end of the handle
So we push a little further, a little stronger. Always with ease. We appreciate the clutch-assisted most effective. This "anti-dribble" appears very pleasant when releasing the left lever. This even on a 373.2 cc engine, for which the engine brake seems more than reasonable. We gain in efficiency what some will lose in fun. A more appreciable, therefore, just like braking. ABS is disconnectable from the instrumentation. However, we prefer to opt for the Supermotard mode. There, it is disabled only at the back and allows some fantasies. We immediately realize the high efficiency of the floating stirrup. After twisting turns, crossing beautiful mountain villages, it's time to go home. Turin direction, about forty kilometers.

A small even for the big ones
In the city, the driving position lends itself perfectly to slow-moving handling. As much as it was ready for the attack a little higher. We will describe the posture as "picked up", as the Duke 390 is compact and narrow. However, she is welcoming. The legs easily tighten the metal tank of 13.4 liters with well-thought ergonomics. The knees of the older children will not return to the cashing provided for this purpose. Those of a 1.80m conductor are positioned just below the lower edge of the tank. The footrests are remote and high, sporty way while leaving some comfort to the legs. Thank you saddle 830 mm high!

Legs folded, diving, arms adopt the same inclination as the thighs, and join the handlebars. Of variable section, it is very pleasant to take in hand and valuing. Slightly tilted on the front, we hold the tank taking advantage of the ample saddle driver. Flat, it is more comfortable than it looks and is even within reach of short legs. No more than 1.65 m at the board is enough to put the toes on the ground. The city of Duke? Comfortable!

The multiple pleasure of mono
And always this pleasure for the passenger. What would be a motor so alive without vibrations, even discrete? On the handlebar of the 2017 novelty, we saw intense mechanical sensations, the rhythm of the blasts of the exhaust and engine breathing. Down in the towers, the mono side is present. The close heartbeats and the relative flexibility testify to it. Evolve in town is mainly on the first three reports, and energetically, the fourth is comfortable recovering from 60 km / h. However, the couple is already very present, even if it reaches its maximum value at 7,000 rpm. We once again enjoy playing the softbox and locking pleasantly, while hearing the noisy fan of the liquid cooling to start regularly. A Duke 390, it heats. And it makes you want.

Blindly ? and muted - very clever who could say to be on a motorcycle driven by a single cylinder and assess the engine capacity. When you move on the handlebars of the Duke 390, the landmarks are disrupted. In the towers, taken at high-speed V, we find in this engine a bit of twin ... V also. Sound level and stroke of the piston, but also on the side of the flights and the engine extension. An engine in staircase then, with three sensitive levels, accompanied each one of a clear thrust and a change of sonority. The Duke goes up so fast at 10,000 rpm that it seems to be running out. However, it runs out of steam just before the break, which is 1,000 rpm higher.

Half a day on the handlebars of the Duke 390 and we are under the spell of a bike as simple and exciting to drive as it can be rewarding. If its new generation fork is not adjustable, the quality of depreciation is the rendezvous whatever the conditions. The top-of-the-range equipment of the Duke 390, backed up by state-of-the-art electronics, quickly makes you forget which engine and engine architecture you are on.

Appraisal: The A2 uninhibited
Of course, the Duke 390 cannot claim the same flexibility of use as the bi or four-cylinder A2 that it confronts. Similarly, a finishing detail of the pot can be annoying, as the absence of passenger handles or even real practicalities. It opposes, however, a unique character, many sensations, equivalent performance, not to mention a behavior worthy of the nobility of his name and equipment. Best of all, the Austrian 390 encourages cheerful driving and does not forget a certain luxury.

The Power Parts catalog of the brand is in charge of allowing you to make it to your envy, more urban or sportier. KTM also implements a "connected" option: the KTM My Ride. What to connect your phone to the beautiful digital instrumentation and the simple pilot ... The Austrians have thought of everything, all uses and especially, they listened to the remarks made by the owners of the bike. It remains to see the reception you will reserve because, in the end, we can be beautiful, be the best proposal for lovers of character and sensations and not succeed to please ... Go understand.
